Rotary Club of Lyme Regis

We are a club of 30 or so non-sectarian, non-religious, non-political, business and professional people who meet once a week to have a drink and a light meal, to cultivate fellowship and to discuss and plan how we might serve the local, national and world communities.

We meet on Thursdays
at the
Lyme Regis Golf Club
in Lyme Regis,
at 5.30 for 6pm

We were founded on 1st December 1950, as a "daughter" of the Bridport club. 2000 was thus our 50th anniversary year!

Our organisation is based on the Rotary International model which is consistent at national, district and local levels.

See Rotary International and Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland

Invitation!

Visiting Rotarians and their partners are very welcome to our meetings.

Normally you can just turn up at Lyme Regis Golf club at about 5.30 on a Thursday  and introduce yourself to someone sporting a Rotary pin in the bar!

However, we do sometimes change our routine so it is probably best to check by phoning David Bettes on 01297  560867  or email david.bettes@virgin.net

ShelterBox HQ Open Day
Your chance to see behind the scenes

After the huge success of the Open Day in February, ShelterBox will open its doors again to the public for the chance to visit the HQ of an international disaster relief charity.

This is a great chance to find out about the work that ShelterBox does. You will be able to find out about all the items that go into a ShelterBox, how it gets packed and how it gets delivered to those in need. Also, learn about our Young ShelterBox project, find out how we track our weather related disasters with the Met Office and speak to ShelterBox Response Team volunteers about their first hand experiences delivering aid in the field.

Please feel free to drop by any time between 10am and 3pm.

Address: Unit 1a, Water-Ma-Trout, Helston, Cornwall, TR13 0LW.

 Lyme Lunge:  Rotary Lyme Lunge 2010
raised over £1300

Rotary President John McCallum braved the icy waters to shame fellow Rotarians and get their money

The Rotary Club of Lyme Regis held "The Lyme Lunge" a fancy dress charity swim in the sea on New Year's Day 2010, the recipients of the money raised are Shelterbox and Water Survival.

We had a Shelterbox tent and static display on the beach to complement our activities.  BBCTV Spotlight were also on hand and we had a small slot on their evening program on the 1st Jan.

Thanks to those who braved the icy waters, 'By the Bay' for providing the hot soup and all those who gave so generously.  Proceeds will go to ShelterBox (one is on display above), Water Survival Box and Rotary Charities.

There are couple of video clips and a blog to give some idea of the atmosphere.

This event will be run again on January 1st 2011, hope to see you there!

"You will all be aware of the devastating floods caused by the heaviest monsoon rains in North West Pakistan for 80 years. More than 1500 people have perished, and some 3 million are affected. Hundreds of thousands have been made homeless and/or have no access to clean water.

Extract from BBC On-Line website:  "In the worst-affected areas, entire villages were washed away without warning by walls of flood water," the Red Cross said in a statement.  There are fears diarrhoea and cholera will spread among the homeless. Food is scarce and water supplies have been contaminated by the floods”

Two hundred Water-Survival Boxes (the bulk of our available stock) have been offered to Humanity First UK (a moslem aid agency based in London with which we have collaborated successfully following other disasters in the Indian sub-continent). HF-UK staff would be responsible for ensuring swift transit through customs and distribution to ‘families most in need’. We only await confirmation of the air transport and on-site distribution arrangements before this consignment can be sent. This will leave just 75 packed boxes in our depot, but packing sessions are now being organised for Friday 6 August (morning and afternoon) and next week.

The scale of this disaster and the growing risk of cholera and other water-borne disease will require as much aid as we can send into the foreseeable future. We therefore appeal for funding support to sustain our efforts in the weeks ahead. Each WSB costs £150 including the water-purification kit, other contents and the air freight charges. The current water-purification kit can process some 3,000 litres of water and thus provide for a family of four for up to one year.  Cheques should be made out to ‘Worldwaterworks Limited’ and sent to Rotary, c/o The White House, Pensford, Bristol BS39 4NE or to our registered office – see www.worldwaterworks.org for further details."

Individuals

What we do: The object of Rotary can be summed up as "Service through Fellowship"

We help individuals and organisations locally and internationally.

Sometimes this is with money, sometimes with practical help.
Some examples are:

  • organising outings for disadvantaged children and the elderly;
  • installing a new gate for a local school;
  • filling emergency boxes for international disasters;
  • giving money for a local playing field.

To help do these we also have to raise money. Some of this comes from members directly, but most of it involves organising events to get money from those who attend.

Another important source of help is that RIBI and Rotary International in turn will match what we raise, so that the charity can actually receive four times the amount.

A regular activity every Christmas time is a street collection, including carols around the tree, which is usually in aid of a regional children's charity.
